How to Get the Best Burn Out of Your Candle

Have you ever had a candle that burns down one side or produces a large and unwanted smoking flame? At Penn & Beech Candle Co., we’re here to help you prevent such occurrences. Explore our useful candle care tips and tricks to get the best burn out of your candle and learn about effective safety measures to follow when lighting your favorite scent.

Helpful Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Candle

After unwrapping a new flower scent or a soothing, clean-scented classic, you’ll want to maximize the longevity of your fragrance! Be sure to keep in mind the following tips before striking that match so you can ensure hours of use!

Trim the Wick

Before initially lighting your candle, always remember to trim the wick to about 1/4 of an inch. You can use a household pair of scissors or a wick trimmer! Be sure to do this every time to help the wick stay centered in the candle and minimize the risk of soot buildup. Trimming the wick will also promote a steadier burn with no excess smoke, increasing safety.

Realign the Wick

If you notice that your wick has drifted off-center from its original position after burning it a few times, gradually move the wick back into its centered position while the wax is still soft. This will help maintain an even burn all the way to the bottom of the jar!

Allow the Wax to Pool

To maximize the scent’s throw and the longevity of your candle, allow the wax to melt enough to create a full pool of melted wax that spans the jar. This usually takes about 1 hour. Blowing out the candle before it is melted evenly across the jar can potentially waste valuable burn time with your uneven candle.

Burn in Sessions

Burning your candle for an appropriate amount of time during each session can improve the burn time of your candle. To see the best results, burn your candle between 1 and 4 hours at a time. For added safety, be sure to extinguish the flame when there is about 1/4 inch of wax remaining. This will keep the container from overheating, preventing any cracking.

Avoid Any Drafts

A moving flame due to airflow around your candle may lead to uneven burning and a buildup of black soot. Place your candle away from any open windows, air vents, and fans to ensure a steady and consistent burn and to also prevent potential safety hazards.

Remove Any Debris

Be sure to double check that your candle is free of debris such as dust, pet hair, wick trimmings, matches, and more. Debris in your candle has the potential to generate a flame too large for the candle, leading to immediate safety concerns and an uneven burn.
